Tonight will be the coldest night of this young winter season. Lows everywhere will be in the teens, with a few of the coldest spots dropping into the single digits. But the good news is we have reached rock bottom in this cold wave and starting Sunday afternoon it gets a little warmer. We'll have partly sunny skies and highs getting above freezing.
The early part of this Thanksgiving week gets very complicated and is potentially messy. A storm system will slide into the northeast late Monday into Tuesday and stall out. Ahead of this storm a push of milder air will send temperatures above 40 for the first time in a while. So precipitation that arrives late Monday will be in the form of rain in the valleys and a mix of rain and wet snow in the higher elevations.
However as a second low begins to form along the coast colder air will get drawn back in, changing the rain over to snow. Because this storm will stall out, parts of our area - most likely the higher elevations of the Northern Tier and Poconos - could be in for an extended period of snow from early Tuesday morning into Wednesday. In fact, this storm has similarities to the one that hit a few days before Halloween. The valleys will probably not see much snow at all but the high elevations should see a plowable snowfall.
The good news for the start of the holiday is the weather will improve later Wednesday, typically the busiest travel day of the year. However if your travel plans take you north of PA, keep in mind it may still be snowing. Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday look decent, but still chilly. The next storm takes aim at the region by next Saturday, and it too could bring a mix of rain and snow. We'll deal with that one after we get through this first storm!
